Rasterized Artifacts

I have noticed in the new update there is multiple issues where artifacts are being created after making brush strokes.

My personal experience with this is when using a soft edge brush with opacity pen pressure on a low opacity layer then making a brush stroke it looks fine but when i got to switch tool/switch layer/change layer opacity/any action afterwards essentially, it then creates a low opacity artifact around the entire layers content which CANNOT BE undone separately and is part of the last brush stroke action history.

I have seen other people report that using the new ("If you hold the hot key for more than a second, then releasing it will now return to the previous tool") feature will create artifacts after letting go of the used hotkey (The eraser tool hotkey in particular keybinded to "e") and CAN BE undone separately using undo action.

When using a soft brush try turning on OR off the "GPU" checkbox in the brush settings.

Unfortunately, I can't give an exact answer to that problem, but I contacted the support months ago and they helped me out. It was either because of that checkbox being turned on or off (but I don't remember which one) :D

Just try it out and see if the problem still occurs.

Regarding the issue with artifacts being created when painting:

- Issue exist in previous versions of the program (i tested)
- The artifacts appear to stick even when setting the layer to 0%
- The artifacts appear to stick even after restarting the program
- Issue replicates 100% of the time
- Issue can be replicated on all canvas sizes/ dpi settings
- Issue can be replicated using all brushes
- Issue can be replicated using any layer blending mode
- Issue can be replicated using any starting layer opacity 0.1% - 100%
- Issue won't replicate when trying to draw on a 0% opacity layer
- Disabling GPU acceleration for individual brushes/whole program does not fix issue

Here is an example of what it looks like

Created a soft edge brush stroke on a 20.00% opacity layer:

I have conveniently made copies of these screenshots and desaturated/ increased contrast so you can see it more clearly:

I believe this issue went under the radar since its hard to see, where you do see this though is when creating fading/gradients with a soft edge brush on highly saturated solid colors with a dark color, hope this issue can be found and fixed soon

New findings:

- Issue doesn't seem to replicate on a white background
- Issue effects custom brush forms aswell
- Painting over the 0.00% opacity layer artifacts will use a square as the brush form

Conclusions:

- Issue seems to be that a solid color hard edge mask of all pixel content is being created after a stroke

Examples:

Coming back to this now, as i have found a better way to describe the issue that is happening here and how it could be fixed.

To simplify the issue, pixels are capped at reaching a minimum 0.1% opacity (roughly) when changing layer opacity.

This means two noticeable things:

1. If you were to set ANY layer to 0.00% opacity, you will still be able to see it (especially when there is contrast to be seen)

2. Before i mentioned that this was easy to see in particular when painting on a layer with soft edge brush strokes then lowering the layer opacity, well this is because the outer soft edges of the brush stroke never go to 0% opacity, as you decrease the opacity of the layer the outer edges of the brush stroke made SHOULD disappear gradually towards the center of the brushstroke (the most opaque spot), but since all pixels are capped at 0.1% opacity (roughly) you get a very ugly result with a outer ring always staying at 0.1% opacity

A example testing with this, i created a white background and then created a new layer with a black box, i then set the black box layer to 0.00% opacity, after doing so you can still see the black box faintly, to be precise, using the color picker the white background is (255, 255, 255) and the area where the black box is, is (254, 254, 254) a difference of 1 on each color channel (value of 99.6%)

My conclusion is that there maybe some rounding issue within the layer opacity function, this issue doesn't exist for brush opacity slider only layer opacity slider, this is a massive problem when trying to blend colors finely, especially on larger canvas sizes where it is easily noticeable
