How is the layer mask work?

I use iPad pro ....... does the layer mask work like photoshop?

That what I try to do....

But it do not work for me. (at time 4:40 )

The masks work the same way with the only difference: in Photoshop you use white and black, in Paintstorm you should use brush and eraser.
