Clear under Selection does not seem to work

When I lasso an area on a layer and then go to the Selection menu and come down to "Clear" nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? I can hit ctrl+x and "cut" it out but I would rather use clear.

I am on a windows 64 version 1.54

Clear means - remove selection. To delete selection content you need to press "Delete" button.
