Does the clone reference file have to be on a layer? Or is it possible to clone from the open reference file?
Is it possible to just clone the color of the reference file and use the characteristics of the brush (as in Painter)?

Right now you can cloning only from current document are, but "reference window cloning" is already saved as suggestion
