DPI - needed?

Post by support » Fri May 22, 2015 9:28 am

DPI - Dots per inch, is a measure of spatial printing or video dot density, in particular the number of individual dots that can be placed in a line within the span of 1 inch (2.54 cm).

Example 1: If you want to print your foto 10x10 inches for example in photoshop - you create new document with 10x10 cm and set this dpi to 300 - your file now is 3000x3000 pixels size.

Example 2:If you create new file 10x10 pixels - and after that try to change this file dpi - nothing will be changed - becouse 10px is 10px

If you open jpg foto in photoshop - default dpi for it is 75, but it does not mean anything. DPI needed only for printing if you need use inches or cm.

If you change dpi in pixel dimension - nothing happened. You canvas is changing because you change dpi with inches or cm... you can choose it in photoshop image resizing dialog.

It would be helpful and would be great to have sometime in future, but honestly it's not #1 priority, it falls in category "user experience enhancements".

I sometimes like to set my canvas in inches (often 8x11) or sometimes I have to set it up in cm (that's what we use in Poland so duh :P) and 300, 150 dpi for easy rescale. But, I can just use internet calculator or Gimp (gimp is very nice for this xD very cool canvas option panel) to see what those would be in pixels.

What I think would be more beneficial is canvas size presets with ability to create custom ones, I think.

My response. Needed, but not burning need. :)

Yes! I need DPI settings.

I usually work on 300-600DPI canvas, it's easier to set the size for printing.
And also, it would be great if Paintstorm can set canvas in other format, not just pixel. (cm., mm., inches, etc.)

Another thing that is not really related to the DPI, but related to printng progess is color setting.
I cannot find where I can set my color setting to CMYK  So, I cannot proof my color in CMYK.

Thank you

CMYK - may be later... Most of jet printers works in sRGB or Adobe RGB. But I never heard about painters who paint in CMYK.... CMYK is helpful with laserjet printers.

If you work with printing you don't need CMYK... you need soft proofing aka color management but not CMYK.

CMYK needed for good prints is a myth.

And in areas where you really need CMYK you wouldn't use Paintstorm but some software for DTP.

I didn't know that we don't need CMYK these days.
Many publishers here are still asking for CMYK File, so that's why I ask for a CMYK mode

I printed in RGB myself, but when it comes to printing with publishers, they need CMYK.
Or if you send them RGB, they will convert it to CMYK themselves, and make your work doomed LOL
